Zagreb weather is largely continental, with ample splashes of oceanic conditions. Zagreb weather can be divided into four easily identifiable seasons: summers in the city are warm, winters are cold, cool conditions prevail for most of the spring season while autumns are foggy and rainy.
The capital and largest city of Croatia is located in the northwest part of the country, nestling along the shores of the Sava River and the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain range. Given the city’s unique geographical positioning, it’s easy to understand why Zagreb weather during the winter season is characterized by severe cold spells. The prevailing cold of winter is a direct result of weather fronts coming in from the north. Sometimes bringing snow to the city, these cold fronts are usually manifested in the form of icy winds that drop temperatures to an average of 1°C during the day. During their more severe though, their influence on the patterns of weather in Zagreb is more pronounced, forcing mercury to plummet to a freezing -10°C, occasionally even lower.
Zagreb weather is such though, that the prevailing chilly factor of winter is often intercepted by mild spells with abundant amounts of sunshine. Another interesting aspect of Zagreb weather during the winter season is that precipitation remains at comparatively low levels, so if you are visiting the city during this time of the year, conditions are likely to be fine enough to take in the many splendors Zagreb has to offer.
It should also be noted though, that weather in Zagreb during the winter season is blessed with more than adequate amounts of snowfall, making the city a haven for ski enthusiasts, especially given its proximity to the near by Medvednica mountain range. Understandably, snow fall is at its most common – and certainly, at its heaviest – between December and March.
Zagreb weather during both the spring and autumn seasons is characterized by its instability. While pleasant and sunny spells prevail for most part of both seasons, a certain unpredictability permanently lingers on in the atmosphere, threatening to break the finest of spells with sudden downpours and storms. Occasionally skies will remain damp and overcast for days on end, and these are the times when the bulk of the annual precipitation is deposited over the city. If you are visiting Zagreb during either the spring or autumn season, be always prepared for sudden changes in temperature also, especially during the night when mercury can often plummet to quite cold levels. Autumn weather in Zagreb is also often marred by thick layers of fog.
By the time summer sets in though, weather in Zagreb has put on its warmest disposition, ready to welcome visitors, whose numbers have increased greatly over the last few years. The change in patterns is noticeable as early as May, with mercury slowly but steadily beginning its ascent to significantly warmer levels. Although nights remain cool and pleasant almost throughout the whole season, during the day temperatures remain at an average of 20°C, regularly soaring to well over 30°C. Summer weather in Zagreb is also noticeably dry.
